Teaching Profile:
As well as having a successful performing career, including working with English National Opera, Scottish Opera, Edinburgh International Festival and in France, Italy, Portugal, Sweden and Switzerland and throughout the UK Austin studied with eminent teachers and singers from Italy, America, Austria, Norway, Switzerland, France, Germany and the UK and at the Royal College of Music, London, Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester and the Alexander Gibson Opera School at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and English National Opera's artist training program ENO Operaworks led by Martin Constantine and Jane Robertson.
He was given workshops and masterclasses at the Cite International des Arts in Paris, St John's College, Durham University, Hull University, The University of York, and for OperaLab in Brussels. He is professor of singing at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music & Dance and an approved teacher and visiting teacher to Durham University Music Department and taught previously at Leeds University, Hull University and Glasgow University as well as for the international training, research and performance facility for singers OperaLab. He has also given masterclasses for Leeds Youth Opera, the National Student Opera Society, Berwick Festival Opera and various universities and workshops in schools and the community for English National Opera as a member of ENO Opera Squad and for Berwick Festival Opera and Rocket Opera as well as appearing in education performances and workshops with Scottish Opera. He was also director of choral outreach, chorister vocal coach, acting assistant director and acting director of music at Newcastle Cathedral and has conducted Hexham Abbey Choir, the combined junior choirs of St Mary's Cathedral Edinburgh, Carlisle Cathedral and Newcastle Cathedral, Sunderland Symphony Orchestra, Prince Bishops Brass, All Saints Festival Choir and many other ensembles. Austin is a founder member of the Tyne Coast Arts Collective and has been a panellist for Live Music Now auditions and adjudicator for Reston School vocal festival and the finals of the International Schools Musician of the Year Awards in the Far East.
During his career Austin has worked with world renowned conductors including Sir Charles Mackerras and Sir David Willcocks and directors including Deborah Warner and Olivier Py as well as specialists in acting and movement for singers, improvisation and physical theatre practitioners. He has appeared as a principal on stage in opera alongside some of most renowned singers in the world including Jonas Kaufman.
Austin's students include professional opera singers all over the world, musical theatre performers and those currently preparing for a professional performance career and many have gone on to work with national and international opera companies and in concert all over the globe.
Austin is a Fellow of the Independent Society of Musicians, a fellow of the Guild of Musicians & Singers and a Fellow of the Society of Crematorium Organists (from his previous career as an organist and director of music) as well as having a masters degree and diploma in opera from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and a diploma from the Royal College of Music, as well as certificates from the Open University in linguistics, coaching, learning and leadership, and from Virtual College in equality, diversion and inclusion and mental Health and wellbeing and he has an enhanced DBS.
